uka IZU: Japanese hair care inspired by the forest and sea of Izu
Why change a formula that was already working?
Designed for damaged hair and scalps, the uka IZU line is inspired by a unique territory in Japan: the Izu Peninsula, in Shizuoka Prefecture. A place where the forest, rain, rivers, and sea are deeply connected.
Izu, where the forest nourishes the sea
The story of this new formula begins with Professor Sato, a researcher and surfer, committed to the preservation of natural ecosystems in Japan.
In Izu, he has long observed an essential link: the health of the sea also depends on that of the forest. In a balanced forest, light reaches the soil, leaves nourish the humus, and rainwater carries nutrients to the rivers, then to the ocean.
These nutrients allow algae to grow, and then an entire marine ecosystem to regain its vitality.
But when forests become too dense, this balance is weakened. It's not an excess of kuromoji, but mainly conifer plantations, such as hinoki or sugi, that have grown too close together. Less light reaches the soil, humus forms less effectively, nutrients circulate less, and the sea gradually becomes depleted.
This is where forest thinning comes in: by letting light back into the forest, it helps the soil regenerate and allows nutrients to reach the rivers again, and then the sea.
Kuromoji, uka IZU's signature ingredient
At the heart of the IZU line is kuromoji, a Japanese aromatic plant cultivated on the Izu Peninsula.
Recognizable by its fresh, woody, and slightly floral scent, kuromoji evokes the Japanese forest after rain, mineral-rich soils, foliage, and sea air. In the formula, it brings a sensation of freshness, purity, and balance to the scalp.
But kuromoji also carries a more committed dimension. By using it as a key ingredient, uka supports a local industry around this plant. Its valorization allows producers to be paid and contributes to new forest thinning operations.
Kuromoji is therefore not the cause of the forest's density: on the contrary, it becomes one of the means to participate in its regeneration.
A formula for damaged hair
The uka IZU line was designed for hair and scalps exposed to daily aggressions: stress, fatigue, coloring, heat, UV, dryness, or repeated friction.
The formula combines kuromoji with ingredients from Japanese nature, such as funori, an algae that provides shine, hold, and discipline, rice ferment, as well as amino acids to support the flexibility and comfort of the hair fiber.
The fragrance, composed notably of kuromoji, hinoki, cedar, patchouli, and rose, evokes the forest, rain, earth, and sea of Izu. It transforms washing into a fresh, woody, and soothing ritual.
Sensory and committed hair care
With IZU, uka shows that a care product can be more than just a beauty gesture. It can care for hair, support a local industry, and participate in the regeneration of a territory.
