The facial skin barrier: the basis of beautiful skin

| 2 min read

We often talk about hydration, nutrition or sun protection, but all of this is based on an essential basis: the skin barrier. This natural shield is the secret to healthy, luminous and resilient skin.

Why it’s essential for your skin

When the skin barrier is strong, the skin gains comfort, radiance and resistance. It ages less quickly, responds better to care and retains all its flexibility.

Conversely, a damaged barrier means more sensitive skin, which loses its water and marks more easily.

What is the skin barrier?

Imagine a brick wall:

  • Bricks are dead cells filled with keratin.
  • The glue that binds them together is lipids (ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids).
  • On the surface, an invisible veil called a hydrolipidic film – a mixture of sebum and sweat – completes this defense system.

This trio forms a protective barrier which:

  • protects against external aggressions (pollution, UV, bacteria),
  • prevents dehydration,
  • and maintains the balance of the skin microbiome.

Why it is damaged more easily on the face

The skin on the face is thinner and more exposed than the rest of the body: it is therefore more vulnerable.

Here is what weakens it on a daily basis:

  • Too harsh cleanings,
  • Exfoliations or peelings that are too frequent,
  • The sun, the wind, the dry air, the pollution,
  • Stress, lack of sleep or an unbalanced diet.

How to recognize a weakened barrier

An altered skin barrier can be seen and felt immediately:

  • Tightness, dryness, redness,
  • Reactions to products that are usually well tolerated,
  • Dull complexion, small scales or excess sebum,
  • Feeling like “nothing is working”: treatments seem less effective, makeup doesn’t hold well.

A complete routine: the right actions to protect and reveal the radiance of the skin

Clean gently

Respectful cleansing is essential to preserve skin balance. The cleansing oil dissolves makeup and sebum without rubbing, while lukewarm water rinses without irritating.

In case of a weakened barrier, it is better to avoid foams and hard water, which are often too delipidating, and opt for a double cleaning with oil:
the first eliminates surface impurities, the second purifies while restoring the hydrolipidic film.

Our selection:

Regena facial oil 30ml Waphyto Regena Nourishing Cleansing Oil – Waphyto
Fluid oil that gently dissolves makeup and pollution.
Bizen Rice Ferment Cleansing and Makeup Remover Balm Make-up remover balm – Bizen

Cleans while preserving hydration.

Hydrate and nourish

Two complementary actions to preserve the balance of the skin. Hydrate, means providing water to maintain flexibility and prevent dehydration. To feed, it is to strengthen the hydrolipidic film thanks to plant oils and lipids which retain this water and protect the skin from attacks.

THE two-phase serums, combining aqueous phase and oily phase, naturally recreate this balance:
the first quenches the cells, the second seals in hydration and restores comfort. Result: plump, luminous and soothed skin.

Nutrition and hydration to revitalize the skin.

Camellia oil and biotechnology to strengthen elasticity and youth.

Protect from UV

Even without sunlight, UV rays pass through clouds and windows, accelerating aging and weakening the skin barrier. Daily protection is essential to preserve the radiance, firmness and evenness of the complexion.
